Do you use night lights? As part of this safety awareness month, make sure you know about the fire dangers they pose. Traditional night lights have bulbs that get very hot. They can burn little fingers and even start fires if they come into contact with something flammable.
Battery-powered night lights aren’t always safe either. Less than 2 years ago, Target recalled more than 140,000 night lights. The problem was an overheating battery causing the light to melt.
There’s a new, safer way to go with outlet covers that have night lights built into them. A light sensor turns them on and off automatically. The LED lights cost just pennies a year in electricity. It also keeps your outlets free for other devices.
While you’re at it, if you have babies or toddlers in the home, Electrical Safety Month is a good time to plug those unused outlets. Little hands just love to explore.
You may not see it on a list of monthly safety topics, but switches with motion detectors make it safer to walk into a dark room with your hands full of toys, laundry, or even a fussy baby.
