When Is It Time for an A/C Tune-up?

The entire country is now in the dog days of summer. The difference for us in the south is the dog days can last for another two months. If you haven’t had your A/C tune-up yet, now is the time to act. Seasonal maintenance is the best way to assure proper operation of the cooling and heating systems in your Auburn or Montgomery, AL home.

Count on Dixie to do it Right

When Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air sends a technician to your home for an HVAC tune-up, you will be getting quality work. Some contractors will do just a cursory inspection and maybe blow some dust off. In our industry slang we call that a “blow and go.” When Dixie arrives, you will get a full-service tune-up based on a checklist.

Change the Air Filter

This is an extremely critical step in keeping your system operating efficiently. We’re aware that many of our clients like to do this on their own, but this is always a part of our A/C tune-up. It’s also an important factor in maintaining healthy indoor air quality.

Clean the Indoor Unit

This is the air handler that pushes the conditioned air into the ductwork and throughout the house. We will clean and lubricate the fans and blowers.

Check All Electrical Connections

All connections are tightened as needed to assure proper operation of all electrical components.

Check Refrigerant Level

The only way to assure the A/C is producing cold air is to make sure the refrigerant level is correct. If the level is low, it could indicate a refrigerant leak which will have to be addressed.

Verify Condensate is Draining Properly

When the air conditioner takes the humidity out of the air the water has to go somewhere. If the condensate doesn’t drain because of a clog in the system it can cause damaging leaks, especially if the air handler is in an attic.

Test Thermostat

The thermostat must be calibrated to assure an accurate temperature setting. If it’s not it can lead to an uncomfortable home and/or wasted money on higher utility bills.

Clean Outdoor Condenser

Dirt and debris will be removed and cleaned from the cooling fins/coil (like the fins on your car’s radiator). Once again, all electrical connections will be checked and tightened as needed.

Make a Test Run

Before the Dixie technician completes your A/C tune-up he or she will run the system for a few minutes to make sure it is operating correctly.  It’s one more way to determine if any further repairs are needed.
