Workplace Electrical Safety

“If in doubt throw it out.” Chances are good you’ve heard that old saying in regard to food safety, but what about when it comes to electrical safety in your business or factory? Ignoring electrical safety and risking workplace fires can be a lot deadlier than week-old chicken salad.

  • Is there a microwave oven in the break room that repeatedly causes a circuit breaker to trip?
  • Throw it out!
  • Is there a buzzing or electrical arcing sound coming from a light switch?
  • Throw it out and have it replaced by a licensed electrician!
  • Are the lights flickering for no apparent reason?
  • OK, you can’t throw out all the lights but you can find out why it’s happening!

Here’s the point from your friends at Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air: Those examples are ticking time bombs that can cause fires in the workplace. Don’t take chances with faulty electrical systems or appliances anywhere, but especially not in an office building, strip mall, factory, or rental property where multiple lives are at stake.
Running any sort of business or commercial venture is tough, but fire prevention measures always must be at the top of the list. Here are just a few more electrical safety suggestions to keep in mind.

  • Make sure everyone, employees and/or tenants do their part – One example is the employee(s) who feel the need to have a space heater to stay warm, but it keeps tripping the breaker. Explain how dangerous the situation is and discuss other ways to make sure his or her work area is comfortable.
  • Minimize the use of extension cords – Never run those cords under rugs or mats and never string extension cords together. Note: The same rules apply to outlet strips.
  • Use only properly rated & inspected devices – Make sure all electrical devices are properly grounded or double-insulated and have been approved by a national testing laboratory like Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Water & electricity don’t mix – Make sure all electrical circuits near water are protected by GFCI devices. Never operate electrical appliances when your hands are wet or while standing in water.
