May means Mother’s Day AND National Electrical Safety Month. Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air wants to use this opportunity to make sure your home is safe for Mom and the entire family every month—not just safety month.
Do you use night lights? As part of this safety awareness month, make sure you know about the fire dangers they pose. Traditional night lights have bulbs that get very hot. They can burn little fingers and even start fires if they come into contact with something flammable.
Battery-powered night lights aren’t always safe either. Less than 2 years ago, Target recalled more than 140,000 night lights. The problem was an overheating battery causing the light to melt.
There’s a new, safer way to go with outlet covers that have night lights built into them. A light sensor turns them on and off automatically. The LED lights cost just pennies a year in electricity. It also keeps your outlets free for other devices.
While you’re at it, if you have babies or toddlers in the home, Electrical Safety Month is a good time to plug those unused outlets. Little hands just love to explore.
You may not see it on a list of monthly safety topics, but switches with motion detectors make it safer to walk into a dark room with your hands full of toys, laundry, or even a fussy baby.
Most importantly, call Dixie and schedule a Safe & Sound inspection. This is critical—especially in older homes. It includes comprehensive electrical testing to find potential problems before they put your life in danger. Among the electrical test equipment used is an infrared scanner. It locates electrical hot spots behind walls and ceilings before they start a fire. Dixie’s commercial electricians also use a circuit analyzer. It finds loose connections and faulty grounds.
Don’t forget about safety outside the house. As in: “Knock. Knock.” “Who’s there?” Now it’s a question you don’t have to ask. Buy yourself a doorbell with a hidden camera. The Wi-Fi enabled camera can stream video to any device hooked up to your wireless network. Some cameras also stream the video to the cloud so you can see who’s at your door when you’re away.
The cameras are cool, but they may not scare criminals away when you’re not there. Summer is a favorite time for thieves to strike while families are away on vacation. Protect your home and belongings with outdoor security lights. The electricians at Dixie can put together a plan just for your home. The use of motion detectors is a good way to scare those bad guys away.
There are many electrical and HVAC contractors who want your business. Don’t decide until you call Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air, where our electrical safety training is second to none. No one will work harder or has more tools to keep your home and family safe.
