Electric Vehicle Types
You can divide alternative fuel vehicles into three broad classifications. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Hybrids
These are probably the most well-known. They are powered by an electric motor and a small gasoline engine. When the batteries run down the engine recharges them. A true hybrid does not have a plug-in charging system for the batteries.
Plugin Hybrids
Many consider this to be the best of both worlds. It has enough range to run solely on battery power for most commutes. The batteries are then recharged overnight. You could potentially go weeks without even using the gas engine. When used for longer trips it switches over to gas power when the batteries die.
Battery Electric
This type of vehicle will have the smallest carbon footprint but is also the most limited. Batteries are the only source of power and if they die before you reach a charging station you are stuck. Several models of electric vehicles now have a driving range of well over 200 miles and some are close to 300 before you need to plug it in.
MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS
Electric vehicle manufacturers, Tesla probably the best known, have their own charging systems. While there may be differences, each requires a certain level of electrical service to work properly. Dixie has gone through the extensive regulations to be an authorized Tesla charging station installer—and one of the few in the state of Alabama to do so!
LEVEL 1
This is the simplest form of charging for an electrical vehicle. It charges with a normal 120-volt AC outlet but there are limitations. It must be a dedicated circuit used ONLY for vehicle charging and NOT for other appliances. The other limitation to this system is the charging rate. It adds about two to five miles of driving range for every hour of charging.

LEVEL 2

Some vehicles may require this system which charges through a 240-volt AC circuit rated at 20 to 100 amps. If your home has adequate electrical service, the installation is pretty straight forward for our Dixie electricians. It’s the same type of heavy duty circuit as the ones for your clothes dryer and electric range/oven. Manufacturers, including Tesla, have special charging equipment to match the dedicated circuit. While a level two is more expensive, the faster charging rate may well be worth the investment. It will provide between 10 and 60 miles of driving range for every hour of charging.

LEVEL 3

This is the fastest way to charge a vehicle but is designed for commercial use and requires industrial level electrical service. It’s considered much too expensive for residential applications.
