Do’s and Don’ts: What Can You Pour Down the Kitchen Drain?

Do's and Don'ts- What Can You Pour Down the Kitchen Drain?

Your kitchen drain is able to accommodate disposing small amounts of food debris, water and water-based liquids. However, there are certain materials that should be avoided to prevent clogs and other damage to your plumbing system. If you have a drain clog and need the expertise of a professional plumber, call Dixie Electric, Plumbing & Air. We’ll have your drain cleared and water flowing again in no time.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can and cannot put down your kitchen drain.

What you can put down your kitchen drain:

  • Small amounts of food debris: Small bits of food that have been rinsed off plates and utensils can be disposed of down the drain. However, large chunks of food should be disposed of in the trash to prevent clogs.
  • Dish soap: It’s safe to use dish soap to clean your dishes and rinse it down the drain.
  • Water-based liquids: You can safely pour water and water-based liquids down the drain to rinse your dishes and clean your sink.

What you cannot put down your kitchen drain:

  • Grease and oil: Grease and oil should never be poured down the drain as they solidify and can cause blockages in your pipes. Instead, pour them into a container and dispose of them in the trash.
  • Coffee grounds: Coffee grounds do not break down easily and can cause clogs in your drain. Dispose of them in the trash or add them to your compost.
  • Eggshells: Eggshells also do not break down easily and may clog drains. Dispose of them in the trash or add them to your compost.
  • Pasta and rice: These foods can expand in your pipes and cause blockages. To keep drains clear, never wash them down the drain. Put them in the trash can.
  • Fibrous vegetables: Vegetables like celery and asparagus have long fibers that can get tangled in your pipes and cause clogs. They should go in the trash or compost bin.
  • Chemicals: Harsh chemicals like bleach and drain cleaners can damage your pipes and should not be disposed of down the drain.

In summary, it’s important to be mindful of what you dispose of down your kitchen drain to prevent clogs and damage to your plumbing system. For clogged drains or other plumbing issues, just call Dixie and it’s done!
